About Me

My photo
My name is Dawn. I am the founder of Di Cartel; A line of amazing class and style and one that you will hear much more about-I promise you that! I'm going to take you all on a journey with me from the start. I'm going to share my ideas, my mistakes, the trial and errors and eventually, my success! So hang on...it's gonna be an awesome ride.

NEED VS. WANT

When you first get started with the basics of sewing, you'll be so motivated to run out and get everything you think you'll need to become the next Versace. Being as we all know Versace didn't become one of the biggest names in fashion overnight, it's really not feasable nor cost effective to just go crazy at your local fabric and notions store. (Been there, done it!) So...I have devised a list of things I recommend you start with...your "must haves". On the page following this, I will be writing a product review for particular brands I have found to be the best.
  • Sewing For Dummies- This book contains a wealth of basic sewing tips for the beginner and will more than likely serve as your main reference for starting out. No need to read cover to cover, but I highly recommend it! There a various different exercises that will test your skill level and challenge your knowledge.
  • The OBVIOUS-A sewing machine. I have the Brother CS6000i. (Look for the review of this product on the following page.)
  • Needles (for your machine)- YOU WILL NEED BACK UP!! There are various different types for different types of fabric as well as machines so just be careful that you purchase the right ones.
  • Bobbins, bobbins, bobbins-Your machine will come with some and that's ok to start but you can NEVER have enough of these. (Again, be sure to refer to your user manual for what size bobbins to use. The wrong ones will only be a waste and moreover, could damage your machine and get tangled and well...it's just NOT a good thing...
  • A large sketch pad- For your design ideas and possibly making smaller patterns
  • A roll of banner paper-For pattern making-We'll get into this more later
  • Sharp scissors-You will need 3 different types to start, although, 1 will be fine (for now) as long as they are used particularly to cut fabric. You should take care NOT to cut paper with a pair of nice sharp fabric shears-NOT COOL.
  • Cotton thread and/or polyester- Stick with neutral colors for now. Don't buy anything too special, you'll be going through it FAST and the majority will probably end up in the trash.
  • Clear plastic storage containers and/or totes- These will only help you organize all of you notions and materials as well as fabrics and scrap. I like the ones with drawers but anything will work, really. It's all about personal preference.
  •   ***TIP: YOU DON'T HAVE TO PURCHASE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FROM A CRAFTS OR FABRIC STORE. FOR EXAMPLE, I WENT TO WAL-MART AND PURCHASED A FISHING TACKLE BOX FOR MY FIRST SEWING KIT. I THINK IT COST 6.00 OR SO IN COMPARISON TO 20.00 AND UP FOR THE SAME BASIC IDEA AND USUALLY SMALLER IN SIZE.
  • A sewing surface with enough room for cutting and sewing-A lot of people feel more comfortable on cutting patterns and fabric on the floor and move the cut fabric to the sewing surface. Again, it's a matter of personal preference.
  • A large, self healing mat
  • Rotary cutter-small and larger
  • Measuring tape-NOT the carpenter kind! (just thought I'd throw that out there..you never know)
  • Cork back 18 inch ruler
  • Sewing pins and a pin cushion
  • *****SEAM RIPPER***** MAKE IT 2! (they're small and get lost easily) THIS IS A MUST HAVE!
